Manyana Special Conservation Reserve
In 2020, with more than 80% of the surrounding Conjola National Park newly devastated by the Currowan Fire, the Manyana community began fighting to protect a 20.2 hectare block of preserved native forest from bulldozers.
The area is a refuge for animals who escaped the Currowan Fire and a crucial biodiversity hotspot from which the Conjola National Park can regenerate. It’s also become a symbol of hope for a community traumatised by the fires.
In January 2020, Manyana Matters started a community campaign to stop this unburnt habitat from being cleared for a housing development.
In May 2020, in the middle of the COVID-19 lockdown, the developer advised they were ready to begin clearing. However, our little community had a different plan – residents and holidaymakers wanted to preserve the unburnt forest forever.
Our campaign continues, and we call this area the Manyana Special Conservation Reserve, in the hope that one day it will become just that.
